Installing OS/2 on an IBM Thinkpad 1452. Updated July 18, 2000

First off, many thanks to Daniela Engert. This OS/2 install would have been impossible without her work on DANIS506, the replacement IDE driver.

To make the updates easier, I highly suggest you get WarpUP! from Indelible Blue. It's the best $19 you'll ever spend :-)

    Notes
  1. The initial boot-up screen on the Thinkpad 1452 takes a long time. There is a hidden memory check going on that you can abort by hitting <ESC>. You can see the memory check by disabling the "Silent Boot" option, found on the Startup Configuration screen in your BIOS Setup screen (press F1).

  2. You may experience lockups during OS/2's boot-sequence(especially before applying the fixpaks!). If this happens, shut down the i1452 for a few minutes before booting.
    Installation Process
  1. Download the required updates

  2. Create Updated Installation Disks

  3. Replace faulty IBM1S506.ADD driver on Installation Disk 1. IBM1S506.ADD will hang on the ALi5229 chipset. We rename DANIS506.ADD to IBM1S506.ADD becase the install will fail if IBM1S506.ADD does not exist.
    1. Delete IBM1S506.ADD
    2. Unzip the DANIS driver
    3. Copy DANIS506.ADD to disk 1
    4. rename DANIS506.ADD to IBM1S506.ADD

  4. Begin OS/2 installation

  5. Selections for System Configuration screen 1
    1. Mouse = PS/2 Style Pointing Device
    2. Serial = Support Installed
    3. Primary Display = VGA (installed later)
    4. Secondary Display = None
    5. CD-ROM = Panasonic CF-41, CR-571, CR-572, CR-574, CR-581, LK-MC579
    6. MultiMedia = NONE (installed later)

  6. Selections for System Configuration screen 2
    1. Advanced Power Management = No Support Installed (locks up system if installed)
    2. PCMCIA support = No Support Installed (no luck yet)
    3. Infrared Supprt = No Support Installed (I have no Infrared hardware, so I didn't try it)

  7. Fix DANIS506 - need to change IBM1S506.ADD back to DANIS506.ADD so that future fixpaks do not overwrite the functioning IDE driver.
    1. Edit CONFIG.SYS
      1. rem BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD /V
      2. BASEDEV=DANIS506.ADD /V
    2. copy IBM1S506.ADD to DANIS506.ADD
      1. cd x:\OS2\BOOT (x = OS/2 system partition)
      2. copy IBM1S506.ADD DANIS506.ADD

  8. Audio
NOTE: If you delay the audio install until after the two Fixpaks you will encounter a weird bug in PMMERGE associated with MINSTALL. Use the move-window-offscreen trick to work around it.
    1. Unzip the ESS SOLO Driver
    2. Run the multi-media install
    3. select the ESS SOLO driver
    4. If needed - PMMERGE/MINSTALL bug workaround - Move the install window off-screen to the right, so you can still see the install button
    5. Press install

  9. Fix Recovery Choice-Command Line boot CONFIG.SYS
NOTE: If you don't fix this then the Recover Choice(ALT-F1 during boot) will not be able to boot with F2 command line after the Device Driver Fixpak has been installed.
    1. Same as Fix DANIS506, only on the file is x:\OS2\INSTALL\CONFIG.SYS

  10. Install updates (WarpUP! is very useful here)
    1. Fixpak 13
    2. Device Driver Fixpak 1

  11. Video
    1. from an OS/2 command prompt, run SDDSE702 to extract the SciTech drivers
    2. run SETUP to see your options if you are not in the US
    3. SET LANG=en_US (no spaces before or after the =)
    4. SETUP SDD

  12. Modem - No Luck - locks up

  13. Installation of PCMCIA Support - No Luck Yet
