My hardware - 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 in a late 2015 13" MacBook Pro - maxes out at macOS Monterey. Is their any chance of a hardware update so it could run something more recent? There are now too many necessary updates which won't run on Monterey.

As a rule, no. There's no hardware you can add to the system to allow the installer for later versions of MacOS to install on that laptop.

However, there is Open Core Legacy Patcher. I've attempted to setup my ancient MacPro with a Radeon graphics card to use it but I gave up. The project is intended to allow you to patch an Apple installation image for a later version of the OS and boot it with a special boot that replace Apple's.

9 years is a pretty good run, and no: there isn't anything you can do to
make it run something beyond Mac OS 12 Monterey.

Oh, and it's an "Early 2015" model. There was no "Late 2015 13" MacBook Pro"

replacement. Very good deals available now on m3 and m3pro
MacBooks, with the m4 release only weeks away.

I, too, had a 2015 MacBook Pro 15". Very good design at the
time, better than the butterfly keyboard models that
replaced it. I kept mine for about 6 years, but... time (and
technology) marches on...

I don't not what the supposed "necessary updates" are, but as long as
the computer (or cellphone, or car, or house, or anything else) is
still working and does what the user wants, there is no need to replace
it every few years.

9 years old is nothing and a decent computer should and does usually
last a lot longer than that, barring any hardware failure. My old
PowerMac G3 lasted me 20 years of daily work and leisure use before it
had to be replaced due to a motherboard problem.

The nonsense of constantly replacing things is "encouraged" by the
companies mainly because they want to get more money out of their
customers. That's also one of the reasons Apple slowly moved into
making it more and more impossible to repair or upgrade the internals
of their computers, and other companies as usual followed Apple's lead.

I'm gonna try installing Open Core Legacy Patcher and running Sonoma. I'll report back here on how that goes. When I installed Ventura on my MacPro, the graphics display was really bad. So I'm running Catalina, the last version it supports without Open Core Legacy Patcher.

Yes. The "upgrade" is to buy a newer system. Does not have to be new. Loads
of good buys on eBay for used M1/M2 Pros and Airs.

I have a 2014 Mac Mini that still runs fine. I put a 500GB SSD in it, which makes a huge difference since its a shitty i5 with 8GB RAM. Still gets the occasional OS update and Safari updates.

But I also have this M2 MacBook Pro. Bought used on eBay when the M3s came
out. 16" screen, 1 TB drive, 32GB RAM. Should last me a few years.

The system I was trying to upgrade was a Frankenstein. It was MacPro where I'd replaced the processors with high clock CPUs and flashed the memory turning a stock MacPro into a later version that could support more memory. I also added a Radeon graphics card flashed for Apple so it boots using the graphics. Also the Samsung 870 SSD didn't reboot normally. The process would halt with a core dump. I changed that to a Crucial M1 drive and the reboot problem went away.

When I attempted to flash an install for Monterrey with Open Core Legacy Patcher it didn't boot. And it took almost a total wiping of my drives so that the standard OPTION boot showed bootable drives. It's back to Catalina and boots/reboots as expected.

Ah, that makes sense. I'd expect OLCP to run into potential issues with nonstandard hardware configurations.

There are patches to allow later OS' to run on older H/W and many guide
sites and YouTube videos to help you through it.
