• HumbleChoice January 2025

    I'm honestly not sure why I bother with these. I've pretty much burned
    out on HumbleChoice games. Their selection of games is decreasing in
    quality as the months roll by, and they aren't really that good a deal
    anymore. Well, not compared to some of the alternatives anyway.

    On the other hand... dropping eight new games into the library all at
    once does still give me a tingle. So tingle me, HumbleChoice! Tingle
    me like it may be your last time! :-)

    * Sonic Frontiers
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/1237320/Sonic_Frontiers/
    It's a Sonic game, which should give you a basic idea of
    what to expect. Mechanically, the game is quite solid;
    the running and jumping (the stuff you expect from the
    franchise) are quite well done. It's everything surrounding
    the game --the awful fetch quests, the storyline, the map
    design-- that makes this a less than stellar experience.
    Not quite "Sonic '06" bad... but not really very good
    either. Just play the originals on the Megadrive; it
    never got better than that.

    * Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered https://store.steampowered.com/app/2525380/Tomb_Raider_IVVI_Remastered/
    It's the classic Tomb Raider games with a graphical update.
    As remasters go, they're fine. The problem is, they're
    remastering the bottom half of the classic Tomb Raider saga,
    and those games weren't that good to start with. Sure, they
    look a better now than they did back in 1999... but they
    still feel very tired with regards to their gameplay, level
    design and controls. If you gotta play these games, the
    remasters are the way to do it... but there's really no point
    to playing them at all..

    * Hunt: Showdown 1896 https://store.steampowered.com/app/594650/Hunt_Showdown_1896/
    It's an extraction shooter... except set in the Weird West.
    It's a quite pretty game, the weird-west setting is fun, and
    if you like extraction shooters, it's not too bad. But if the
    genre doesn't appeal to you, this won't make a convert out
    of you, and the heavy-handed monetization is annoying.

    * Etrian Odyssey II HD https://store.steampowered.com/app/1868170/Etrian_Odyssey_II_HD/
    It's a modern remaster of a classic JRPG. I can't really
    judge this one fairly, since I'm not a fan of the genre; in
    fact, I'm an anti-fan, and my bias would probably make me
    judge this game more harshly than it deserves. This version
    looks nicer than the original did on the Nintendo DS, anyway.

    * Nice Day For Fishing https://store.steampowered.com/app/2393160/Nice_Day_for_Fishing/
    This one is apparently based on some YouTube comedy series.
    If you're not a fan of that, you probably won't see the point
    to this game. It's not that there's anything wrong with it per
    se --it's a fairly generic retro-themed JRPG-clone-- but why
    play this one when there are hundreds of other similar games
    to choose from?

    * Metal Slug Tactics https://store.steampowered.com/app/1590760/Metal_Slug_Tactics/
    Yeah, that's what the fast-paced arcade shooter/platformer
    "Metal Slug" franchise needs: a slow tactical game. That's
    a perfect match. Right up there with peanut butter and
    Gorgonzola.

    * Settlement Survival https://store.steampowered.com/app/1509510/Settlement_Survival/
    Yet another half-assed city-builder game. Buggy and
    unoriginal, with no real 'hook' to set it apart from the
    dozens of other similar games. Meh.

    * Wizard of Legend 2 https://store.steampowered.com/app/2193540/Wizard_of_Legend_2/
    An action-RPG with a bit too much focus on movement and
    jumping. Dodgy combat and bugs don't help much either, and
    there's no real point to progression either. It's average at
    best.

    This was your opportunity to put your best foot forward for the start
    of a new year, and this is what you're offering? I'm not feeling the
    tingle, Humble!

    See you in thirty days. Maybe there will be some GOOD games next
    month.

    Doesn't really matter. I wouldn't be any happier with these games last

    Mostly because you are a fan of the youtube series I guess.
    I find them actually quite enjoyable (Viva La Dirt League).
    They also have started to have their own DnD miniatures (although for
    that they chose the so far unseen Dragon of Schmargonrog which means
    they could take any dragon mini and make that into the dragon. Although,
    that maybe part of the joke)

    Ooh, finally one I'm interested in. I love Viva La Dirt League. They do
    a MMO parody series, which this is from.

    This is the first episode he appeared in (rather lackluster)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vyw6n1EKlww

    This is all the episodes involving the fisherman (as of this video
    anyway) which gets increasingly better as it goes along.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEe-ZeVbTLo

    They also used to do some souls parodies I liked. Roly Poly is probably
    the one I liked best.

    ... O.k. I'm not actually interested in the game, it looks like slop as
    the kids are calling it these days.

    Apparently the first was a good game, and I'm interested to try it, it's

    You may already own it; check your Epic games library. It was a one of
    the freebies that they gave away December 2024.

    It was also part of the HumbleMonthly selection in 2018 (as a Steam
    game), a freebie on Twitch in 2020, imported to Amazon in 2021, and
    added to HumbleTrove in 2022. Also, I gave away a copy during the 2022
    Holiday Give-Away So plenty of opportunities to have grabbed the game
    in the past if you were greedy and take everything regardless of
    quality. Which might not be what you do, but maybe you know somebody
    like that. ;-)

    I played Frontiers on Switch, and my opinion is its a pretty aalright
    game. It feels like its trying to copy Oddessy a bit, and yea the story
    and map are pretty rushed (the final "area" was originally a full map
    but was cut down to being basically a playable cutscene for example),
    but the combat and actual levels were pretty fun.

    Also, have you played the Adventure games?? Those are definitely an
    improvement on the Megadrive games.

    I fired it up, and I was like "how do I play this game, there's too
    much, I don't understand what's going on?" Started watching a
    playthrough, there was a tutorial. Scratching my head, I wondered what
    was going on. Thought, well it's been 3+ years, I'll look up if anyone
    played it here.

    I played it. *facepalm* totally forgot. Explains why I'm not at a
    tutorial, it must've saved my game. I don't seem to have wrote much
    other than I played it and liked it. I don't remember it at all, which
    isn't a good sign. Oh well. I'm just going to quietly uninstall it now.
