Fortnite's "Save the World" mode is going free-to-play. https://save-the-world.fortnite.com/en-US/?lang=en-US

Now, if you're like me, this news probably confuses you. Isn't
Fortnite already a free game? Yes... and no. Its battle royale mode is
free, as was its Creative mode. But the "Save the World" mode was
still required payment. As I understand it, the "Save the World" mode
was the original game (sort of an Overwatch clone) that only had
moderate success before the other modes made it the gaming power-house
it is today. In fact, for a while Save-the-World mode was pretty much
abandoned by Epic for a while.

But I guess with Fortnite's popularity --regardless of game-mode--
starting to decline (and Epic's fortunes so heavily dependent on its
success), Epic has to attract new users somehow. "Hey kids, try this
new/old game-mode; it's free now again. Buy some more hats and
character skins, wontcha? Tim Sweeney's expensive lawsuits aren't
    gonna pay for themselves!"

Meh. It makes no never-mind for me; I never could get into the game
regardless of mode. It's too oriented toward the tweenie-bopper set
who make up the bulk of its population. But maybe they'll be happy
about the news. Will it drag them back from Roblox, you think?

I mean, it's pretty easy to ignore starving Victorian children.
    They've been dead for 100 years. ;-)

I haven't /totally/ ignored Fortnite. I had to give it a try at least
once... which I did, years and years ago, back when it started
becoming popular. I only played the free version (whichever that was
back then) and I didn't stay very long. It just didn't have anything
that appealed to me; the cartoony graphics, the too-fast gameplay, the
annoying players. I'm pretty sure the game already had a building mode
by then, which may date it.

From what I understand, "Fortnite" has changed significantly from
then... but I've never had any desire to go back and see how it plays
now. Arena shooters were never my thing. I preferred slower, more
tactical games. Preferably without any foul-mouthed twelve-year olds.
