• Will Doom:Dark Ages require BattleNet?

As the marketdroids ramp up the pre-release hype for "Doom: Dark Ages"
(a.k.a. "Doom 6") one new factoid that has been released is that the
game is being released on Battle.Net. Not exclusively, no, but there
is some manufactured excitement that this will be 'only the second non-ActiBlizz game released on Battle.Net evah!!!!1!!!'

But all I'm wondering is: does this mean that --even if I buy the game
on Steam-- I'll still need a Battle.Net account? Because if so, I
think I can happily skip the opportunity. I've no desire to tie up
more of my games to yet-another platform.

It seems unlikely, of course. Not only did Bethesda just have a
disastrous time of it with their "Bethesda.net" platform crashing and
burning (it was, for a while, a requirement for games like "Doom 4",
"Rage 2" and "Wolfenstein New Blood" before being quietly
discontinued), but there's no mention of it in the 'requirements'
section if the "Doom Dark Ages" store page on Steam. Still, despite
numerous questions about the topic from users, MicroActiBethesdaBlizz
have remained rather silent on the issue. Possibly it's still being
    debated internally; who knows?

Still, unlike previous Doom titles, "Dark Ages" doesn't seem to be
garnering the same amount of excitement from users, so its probably in ActiMicroBethBlizzard to either keep this requirement under wraps (if
a Battle.Net is going to be needed) or make it clear that it's not.
Their continued silence isn't helping them.

Meh. I'm only interested in "Doom 6" for its lore anyway... which says
a lot about how far the series has strayed from its origins.

There is an entire category of human beings that watch pro-wrestling
only for the fashion variety, or watch vintage porn only for listening enjoyment of the background music...
.. so in these woke times can we please keep an open mind about Spalls
    choices in life?

    Doom has lore now?

Honestly, it does... and quite extensive lore too. Still quite
sophomoric too, since it's a based on a high-school student level of
'this is cool'... but there's a lot of it. BethesdId went through a
lot of trouble explaining the back-story between what the demons were,
where they came from, who the various enemies were, how the war came
to earth (and the human's mistakes in attracting the attention of the diabolic), and who the Doom-guy is.

For me, at least, it's by far the most interesting thing about the new
Doom games. Certainly it isn't the 'push-forward' and pinata-enemies
gameplay, which I've never fully engaged with. Just the fact that we
aren't continually fighting and re-fighting the same "Demons appear on
Mars" battle over and over again is welcome.

But, yeah... all this in a game designed by a guy who once infamously
said "The story in the game is like a story in porn. Everyone expects
there to be one, but it's not very important." Well, now the story is
the driving force in the franchise.

So THAT's why the gaming industry is imploding?
