When there are bots scraping codes off the publically available Usenet

Those of us who give out codes have been deeply frustrated with the

I really get the impression that Valve thought up as Steam points as
being something with real monetary use (you get 1 point per 1 US
dollar of purchases, I think), that could then maybe be redeemed to
    buy games or something real.

Except then the lawyers pointed out that it was a form of currency and
would probably cause them all sorts of legal problems, especially
given how many jurisdictions Valve operates in, so they quickly backed
away from the idea. Except now people have thousands of points and
nothing to do with it? Quick, give them useless, untradable digital
    gimcracks.

[I like the profile page. It lets me quickly see how many
games I own on Steam, and how many reviews I've posted.
Although the difference between those two numbers is
disturbingly large... maybe its better if I stop looking.]

I've used Steam points to 'buy' rewards (equally useless) for good
reviews, but that's pretty much it, and mostly because I've earned so
many points I don't know what else to do with them.

I've used Steam points to 'buy' rewards (equally useless) for good

many points I don't know what else to do with them.

well, if the number get ever larger the amount of reviews just starts lagging behind.

I think the jurisdiction would be the United States for transactions with
me, just as they charge my state's sales tax on each purchase.

They also have an American operation, Nintendo of America, which is
likely how they manage transactions. Anyone get Nintendo coins in other countries?

On a side note, GOG just this year (or last) started charging sales tax
for my purchases though they had not done so for years.

in a different environment. I'm pretty sure that it was the last game
ever that I pre-ordered, still it came in a nice metal case so there's that!

The hype for this game (well, the original edition) was enormous on
release, with many claiming it would be the next sandbox-sim like
"Deus Ex" and "System Shock". But it was so limited in comparison that
these claims pretty much fell apart once you played it. I often
hesitate to make claims of 'consolitis' being the cause, but I think
in this case it would be quite merited; the hardware of the time
(especially the limited memory) resulted in a much weaker experience.

"Bioshock" wasn't without its good points; it's take-down of Randian
beliefs was on-point, the game's aesthetics were impressive (if not in
the least bit realistic) and the water effects were top-notch. But the
gameplay was unspectacular, with far too much reliance on the "ooh,
there's an oil pit I can light on fire" environmental trickery to
    carry the game.

The "Remastered Edition" was incredibly disappointing, since it was
largely bringing the console editions up to the quality of the PC
version. On the PC, it's hard to even notice any changes. It's still
the better version to play but if you've the older edition already,
there's no real need to go out and replay the newer.

Valve only allows you to review games you own (and have played) on
Steam. So I'll let you logic out the solution on your own. ;-)

Which is a shame, because there are a lot of games in my Steam library
that I have played -and could justifiably review- except I played them
outside of the Steam environment. I don't disagree with Valve's policy
--it attempts to prevent bots from flooding the storepages with bogus
reviews made by people who never played the game-- but I could
probably triple the number of reviews if it wasn't in place.

the least bit realistic) and the water effects were top-notch. But the gameplay was unspectacular, with far too much reliance on the "ooh,
there's an oil pit I can light on fire" environmental trickery to
    carry the game.

The "Remastered Edition" was incredibly disappointing, since it was
largely bringing the console editions up to the quality of the PC
version. On the PC, it's hard to even notice any changes. It's still
the better version to play but if you've the older edition already,
there's no real need to go out and replay the newer.

OK, so I should play the remaster since I only played its original demo
back then. My PC can handle the remaster from its requirements. GoG gave
    me both versions! :O

these claims pretty much fell apart once you played it. I often
hesitate to make claims of 'consolitis' being the cause, but I think
in this case it would be quite merited; the hardware of the time

As I understand it, a REMASTER uses the original game code and just

One of the disappointments that stood out was the early gameplay footage >showing the interesting use of traps and the environment. The problem,
it was just easier to shot them in the face so why bother!

That was frequently a problem in many games that used environmental
traps. Sure, they were neat when you could use them, but too often the
enemies wouldn't co-operate and you'd either have to work to get the
bad-guys into position so you could 'trap' them, or you'd spring the
trap and it wouldn't be as effective -whether in times or resources-
    as just shooting them.

[I'm suddenly reminded of that scene from the movie 'Austin
Powers', when big-bad Dr. Evil insists on trapping the hero
in a small room with sharks, while his son insists, "Just
    shoot them!"]

The alternative, of course, is to make the traps so obvious and common
so the enemies /can't/ avoid them because they're all over the place
(a tactic used by "Dark Crusaders of Might & Magic") but then the
ridiculous world design destroys any immersion (who lives in a house
where every floor is covered in oil and every wall covered with
    spikes?)

Too often environmental traps become a game's core gimmick, and
frankly, it's not a very exciting or novel gimmick at that.
Ultimately, all those traps aren't much different from the old
exploding barrel trope that has been with us since 1993. The only
difference is that instead of just shooting the barrel and watching
the gibs fly, you have to switch to a specific weapon or tool to
trigger the trap. It's just more effort for the same effect.

Bioshock 3 was a generally better experience, even if it did suffer a
lot from corridor-shooter linearity. (I know it's supposed to be an
open-world sandbox, but it's really not). There was less emphasis on environmental traps, the worlds were more open and the combat more
frenetic. It largely suffered in world design and aesthetics. The
first "Bioshock" is a better game when it comes to its story and
visuals; "Bioshock Ultimate" is just more fun to actually play.

But overall I still think they're both of them fairly average
shooters, not worth a lot of the hype and praise heaped upon them.

There's really no hard and fast rule, although I generally don't
disagree with your definitions. But, for instance, the recently
released "Dark Forces" described itself as a "Remaster", even though
it used an entirely new engine.

Also, reboots aren't limited to recreating a game; often, they just
take some of the characters and general ideas of the game and
represent it in a new way. This might go so far as change the game's
genre entirely (for example, "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time")

The TL;DR is that the words are used fairly interchangably in the
industry and if you try to insist on specific definitions you're going
to be incredibly frustrated. Marketing cares not for your definitions

Well, I don't think Nintendo has rewritten any laws, so not yet.

Actually, in Japan Nintendo (and other software companies) have had a
lot of influence on its copyright and patent laws (which are
significantly different from that of the West). A lot of Nintendo's
(and Capcom's, and Konami, and the rest) seemingly overbearing
behavior when it comes fighting its fans about tribute games, and
streaming, and mods is a result of that difference. The copyright
holder has a lot more power of what can be done with their IP in
Japan, and things like fair use are much more restricted. And
Nintendo, Sony, and the rest have pressured politicians to keep it
that way, or change it to their advantage.

I tend to think of it as they are just a spectrum of overlapping

Bioshock 3 was a generally better experience, even if it did suffer a
lot from corridor-shooter linearity. (I know it's supposed to be an open-world sandbox, but it's really not).

I enjoyed 3 but it certainly doesn't get anywhere near my PC Classics

    Nintendo DEFINITELY has good lawyers.

    House of Mouse level good?

Well, I don't think Nintendo has rewritten any laws, so not yet.

well, they famously put King Kong into the public domain (trying to
    defend Donkey Kong)

    Isn't that a good thing?

    Only accidentally.

    Still a positive.

Debatable. Copyright actually is a good thing as long as it is neither
    too strong or too weak.

Technically, it wasn't Nintendo that did that. They merely took
advantage of the fact and gave the public more awareness of its
    status.

The fact is, the ownership rights of the character were muddled from
the start. Although the movie was made by RKO Pictures, Merin Cooper
-the creator of the character- claimed he had rights to the IP based
on an agreement not to take a salary while co-directing the film. But
Cooper never did much with the property, while RKO was fairly ruthless
in licensing it. Things got more confused in 1976, when DeLaurentis
licensed the rights from RKO, while Universal objected that _they_ had exclusive rights to the character due to a verbal agreement with RKO.
And all this happened just as the 1933 copyright was due to expire. It
was finally adjudicated that while the rights originally _had_ laid
with Cooper (and that RKO owed him oodles of money for illegally
exploiting it), a failure to renew the copyright meant that the
character was finally in the public domain.

Following the 1976 decision, the Cooper family had sold the rights to Universal. Thus, in the 80s, Universal thought themselves on firm
footing when they sued Nintendo over the King Kong/Donkey Kong issue,
claiming trademark (not copyright) infringement. But it was quickly
pointed out by Nintendo's lawyers that the character had been deemed
into public domain, and that the rights were such a scattered mess
anyway that Universal's trademark claim was unsustainable.

The end result is that the CHARACTER of King Kong is in the public
domain. The various MOVIES remain copyright of the individual
publishers. Certain INTERPRETATIONS of the character (for instance,
the axe-wielding kaiju of the recent 'Monster-verse' films... released
by Universal) are also owned by their respective creators. Ownership
of the NAME is a bit murkier; it's probably public-domain but could
    get you into trouble.

But if you want to make a new story about a giant ape from some
isolated Pacific island who falls in love with a girl, goes to the big
city, and has adventures therein... well, knock yourself out. It's
    open season on big monkeys.

TL;DR: Nintendo didn't get King Kong put into the public domain. They
just took advantage of the fact to defend themselves after Universal
    sued them for trademark infringement.

I like the idea of co-op gaming more than the reality. My game playing
has definitely changed for more extended sessions to when I feel like it
and even then probably only averaging thirty minutes (tops an hour)
before I want to do something else.

It was something I tried in World of Tanks with platooning but although
I enjoyed it, it didn't fit with my play four or five battles and then
do something else. I kinda felt like I was letting my team mates down.
