• Windows 7 32-bit EMS, XMS

Windows 7 32-bit command prompt has no EMS, and minimal XMS.

You could fix this on XP by changing system32\_default.pif settings. But
with Windows 7 this file is protected and can't be changed.

Google found many people with the same problem, but no solution.

So I booted into safe mode to look around. The _default.pif owner was
trusted installer. I tried giving administrator full control, but could
not I kept playing with full control and ownership and eventually got
the owner changed to administrator, with full control. Then I was able
to change the memory settings for _default.pif.

It was late and I don't remember all the window clicky steps, but in
safe mode, it is possible to change the owner. Someone should document
the steps, but I don't remember what they were. :-/

    Oops, _default.pif is in \windows not system32.

In Win7, there should be a prompt for administrator priviledge when a file property is about to be changed. Simply pressing the "Continue" button n
that prompt would allow the changes to be applied.

If the UAC feature is disabled, the access elevation feature would also be disabled. So, no administrator priviledge prompt will be shown, and the file will not be changeable. Unless it's done by explicitly using other user
account which is a member of the Administrator group.

    I don't see that prompt.

If the UAC feature is disabled,

Mine is set to never notify. Maybe that means disabled.

My user account is in the administrators group. I don't know if safe
mode was required, but somehow I changed the owner of _default.pif while
using my account. Windows security is a mystery to me.
