I accidentally set my 'saving images' to DOWNLOADS 'always', when I
actually wanted them sent to GALLERY
How to I get back to having an option?

The OP appears to be playing games with us by being a hit-and-run poster.

    1. He posts an oddball question (usually without enough information)
    2. We invest our valuable time trying to help him
    3. Yet, he invariably disappears

Then... he posts another question where the hit-and-run cycle repeats anew. Does he ever respond?

Is the OP simply playing games or what?

Are the OP's questions ever sincere?
Or does he dig his questions out of a chat session for his amusement?

    What's up, OP?

May I ask the poster to please respond in his other threads to the help
he's been given by many others who have invested their time "helping" him.

Actually, I confused the OP with "croy". My apologies.

Both act similarly, but the OP of this thread did respond (once!) to his
recent thread on blood pressure apps while croy has not responded to the
radio question where a lot of people invested valuable time to help him.

When these posters post oddball questions and then disappear, I wonder.

The OP is genuine. Jim posts in uk.d-i-y and uk.rec.gardening (amongst
    others) and responds to replies.

    Thank you.
Now can someone tell me how to get my options back?
Currently attached photos download to well 'downloads'. I then have to
    MOVE them to Gallery.

What email app - or browser?

In my email app, K9, I don't see an option to 'save' an
attachment. I can download it (button with d/l icon) and then
select where to. Or I can open it (tap the thumbnail) and I am
offered a range of apps including gallery.

I apologize to the OP for accidentally impugning his activities by
confusing him with "croy", where I "think" Dave Royal is on to a solution.

What I would suggest is to either find the setting of where to put
downloads in the specific MUA the OP is using, or... clear defaults.

    1. Settings > Apps > {Gmail, Outlook, Samsung Email, etc.}
    2. Tap Set as default (or Open by default depending on phone)
    3. Tap Clear defaults (normally this resets the "Always" choice)

Next time an image is saved, the app should ask where to save it.
If that doesn't work then there is also an Android "Downloads" setting.

    1. Settings > Apps > Tap the three-dot menu > Show system apps
    2. Find Downloads or Download Manager (if it exists)
    3. Tap Set as default
    4. Clear defaults

If that doesn't work, let us know more details about the setup.

It's that option I have lost. At some point I gave it carte blanche to
always save to downloads and I cannot get the option back.

I think I did all the things that you suggested and posted a photo to
myself which downloaded to DOWNLOADS folder without giving me an option.
BTW I am using Thunderbird on a Galaxy phone and it used to give me that option!

You need to figure out which "app" you set to "always" handle the
particular file type (maybe looking at the timestamps of files in
downloads folder will be a clue?)

Then you will need to clean out the "open by default" setting for that
    app, rather than k9/thunderbird.

Um, but Shirley, Gallery is just another pic-viewing app... along the
    same lines as Googly's Photos.
When you 'download', the app appears to keep track that the file is a
pwiddy pitcher... and when you open Gallery, your saved whatevers are
    listed by month as thumbs.
'You" don't have to transfer anything anywhere.
