    What's true is, the free driver, Nouveau, while still slower than nvidia
    the last time I've heard news of it, have caught up by a lot since
    Turing, and they have quite passionate developers. Of course you can't
    use CUDA with nouveau.

    Maybe someone should do another nouveau vs. nvidia benchmark.

    I know the kernel part is open source. I was specifically talking about
    the part that exposes CUDA and the standard graphics APIs (OpenGL, EGL,
    Vulkan, etc.), and compiles shaders and compute kernels into something
    the GPU can directly understand. None of these run in the kernel, and
    as such none of these fall under the obligations of the General Public
    License, so Nvidia don't need to release the source code; I doubt if
    they'll ever release the source code of that part.

    If you want to prove that the userspace part is available under a free
    license, give me a link to their source code. Hint: It is not <https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules>.

    That's correct. The user-space stuff is still closed.

    But I don't care. I'd use the full proprietary blob if needed.

    The open-source code spooked me for a while because is required
    that the CONFIG_MMU_NOTIFIER option be set in the kernel. This
    option makes no sense with my hardware and there was no way for
    me to enable it. I make several reports on the Nvidia forums
    but I got no responses.

    What is strange is that the proprietary stuff does not require CONFIG_MMU_NOTIFIER.

    But with the last release Nvidia finally dropped the CONFIG_MMU_NOTIFIER requirement from the open-source stuff.

    I've never researched how it works.

    The FXAA filter is selected using the "nvidia-settings" utility.

    After selection, the filter is applied to any OpenGl application.
