• Stallman's GNU C Manual

    From Distro Lackey@dl@lackey.com to comp.os.linux.advocacy on Tue Apr 7 14:49:12 2026
    From Newsgroup: comp.os.linux.advocacy

Dr. Richard M. Stallman, one of the towering figures of 20th/21st
century computing, has, among his many other outstanding accomplishments, written a manual for GNU C:

    <https://savannah.gnu.org/git/?group=c-intro-and-ref>

    <https://cgit.git.savannah.nongnu.org/cgit/c-intro-and-ref.git>

This manual covers the critical GNU extensions to the C language.

C is, was, and always will be the ultimate and *only* programming
language. (All other languages are for pussies and queers.)

Dr. Stallman is the ultimate authority on GNU C and GNU C
    is the ultimate C.

Let's give three cheers for Dr. Richard M. Stallman.

    Hip, hip, hurrah!

    Hip, hip, hurrah!

    HIP, HIP, HURRAH!!!

But Dr. Stallman has a bit of advice, and perhaps a backhanded
    compliment, to the other languages:

"If you are a beginner to programming, we recommend you first
learn a language with automatic garbage collection and no explicit
pointers, rather than starting with C. Good choices include Lisp,
    Scheme, Python and Java."

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Python is for pussies!

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

This is true! I specialise in funny C lang ext. called C++.

All of above quotation mentioned langs (except C) are for pussies.

Dr. Richard M. Stallman, one of the towering figures of 20th/21st
century computing, has, among his many other outstanding accomplishments, written a manual for GNU C:

An unusual feature of this manual is that it introduces C with a
function that calculates the Fibonacci sequence, instead of a Hello
World program. People who know how to program in another language --
especially Lisp programmers -- might be fond of this, but newbies can
be immediately fended off from reading this intro.

Considering how many pitfalls C has compared to many modern languages,
fending off complete newbies might be a reasonable choice. But if your
school introduces programming with C, and if you have to take exams
related to features of C and programming in C, this might not be the
    best manual for you.

The "nice" thing about C is that it is closest to a model of a
CPU, and thus it is easier to grasp what is going on with the
code. Great for writing speedy code, but requires some care.
I spent a fair amount of time writing C code to interface with
things like the GPIB and a data-acquistion boards.

C++ extends C with classes and templates, and now provides
extensive libraries and features like garbage collection... if you
    want that.

The other languages wrap up a lot of the complexity, at the cost
of making some of the workings mysterious, in my opinion.

    C++, why cain't I quit yoooooo? :-D

Schools should introduce programming using Assembly language and including logic gates and Boolean algebra.

These are the basics from which everything else springs.

Go a step further, let students design ASICs using MOSFETs. Good luck

This strays really far from programming though.

    No, it does not.

If one wants to fix cars, one must first understand mechanical
    engineering.

If one wants to fly airplanes, one must first understand
    aerodynamics.

Similarly, if one wants to "program" one must first understand
    the machine.

Stallman's favorite language is Lisp so that's no surprise. He lost
interest in gcc early on and development languished. A group forked the
code to continue development and produced EGCS.

    https://gcc.gnu.org/egcs-1.1/

EGCS was merged back into gcc 2.95 and the group became the maintainers.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cathedral_and_the_Bazaar

Raymond used gcc as an example of the cathedral.

As for bitter, you clearly have little to no idea about the history of

    Oct 2023

I am a highly sought after and highly paid consultant, and I
do it all with GNU/Linux (what else).

The other day I got a call from a big-brass honcho at the
Department of Defense. He said to me: "You are supposed to
be the best." I replied: "Oh please, let's drop the 'suppose.'"

    Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

But anyway, they needed to determine some geodesics for some
hypersonic cruise missile or something. So I derived the
    folowing differential equation system:

    u''[t] + (216*t^3/(225*t^4+16))*(u'[t]^2 - u'[t]*v'[t] - v'[t]^2) = 0
    v''[t] + (288*t^3/(225*t^4+16))*(v'[t]^2 + u'[t]*v'[t] - u'[t]^2) = 0

Holy godzilla mutherfuckers! This is a 2nd-order, non-linear,
non-autonomous system. How am I gonna fucking solve it?

Well, I got GNU/Linux and GNU/Linux has Mathematica, the greatest
CAS on the planet, and so I let it crank. After many long minutes
    the solution came:

    {{u[t] ->
    C[4] + Inactive[
    Integrate][-(3/
    10) (5 C[1] +
    3 Sqrt[5] C[
    1] Tanh[9/2 Sqrt[5] C[1] C[2] - (
    3 C[1] Log[16 + 225 K[1]^4])/(5 Sqrt[5])]), {K[1], 1, t}],
    v[t] -> C[3] +
    Inactive[Integrate][
    3/5 (5 C[1] +
    2 Sqrt[5] C[
    1] Tanh[3/
    50 (75 Sqrt[5] C[1] C[2] -
    2 Sqrt[5] C[1] Log[16 + 225 K[1]^4])]), {K[1], 1, t}]}}

Well, that's that. The DoD got their answer and I got my $50K.

    Another day, another $50K.

Of course Stallman communicating his nasty beliefs and opinions doesn't

written a manual for GNU C:

    <https://cgit.git.savannah.nongnu.org/cgit/c-intro-and-ref.git>

This manual covers the critical GNU extensions to the C language.

    What about them is "critical"?

C is, was, and always will be the ultimate and *only* programming
language. (All other languages are for pussies and queers.)

I'll add that to the list of all the other ignorant, stupid and
uninformed claims you've made about computer languages and programming.

Dr. Stallman is the ultimate authority on GNU C

More likely it's Roland McGrath or Ulrich Drepper.

and GNU C is the ultimate C.

    So a non-standard C is "the ultimate"?

As usual, this is in direct contradiction to previous statements you've made on "standards" and "standardization" (which are, as usual, all over the board, depending on what and who you're arguing for or against).

Let's give three cheers for Dr. Richard M. Stallman.

    Hip, hip, hurrah!

    Hip, hip, hurrah!

    HIP, HIP, HURRAH!!!

    gag
    retch
    SPEW

Python is the best of those, IME.

Dr. Stallman is the ultimate authority on GNU C and GNU C is the
    ultimate C.

Richard Stallman is a confirmed and proud homosexual though.

It's amazing what being rejected by every living, breathing woman
can do to help men come out of the closet.

This is the same poster that literally begs Joel for pix and
constantly ridicules him for being a homosexual. Meanwhile, he
excitedly sucks the cock of the biggest homo in the tech world,
Stallman, and lavishes praise on him. Weird.

I am not a homosexual and don't particularly like them, associate
with them or approve of their lifestyle but, it's not my life they
are living so I live and let live. This closet dweller though, he is
the worst kind of hypocrite. He attacks gays and demeans them, all
the while knowing that he is one, but just doesn't have to courage to
    be one in public.

If that were true, you wouldn't be using homosexuality as a pejorative.
    Think about it.

Larry Pietraskiewiz told his mother he loved her one day. She
replied that she'd like for them to just be friends.

    That's sad!

Then she said "haha, just kidding, I meant 'friends with benefits'.
And he said, "but Mom, you're my mother!"
    "STEP-mother!"
(Or at least, that's been the script from certain videos that
I assure you I _never_ watch, no Sir, not me...)

    heh!

But seriously, the number of "stepmom" and "stepsis" vids on
www.xvideos.com is disappointing. Never appealed to me.

Note: my Dad had tons of girlfriends in the decades after he divorced my
Mom. Commitment issues. 3 I remember were alcoholics, and one got
drunk and came over to our house when my Dad wasn't there and was
fooling around with my little brother (I think he was 18-19 at the time,
she late 30s-early 40s). My Dad came home and caught them in the closet
    - she was naked. Brother told me he was about to butcher her but they
    got caught.

LMFAO! RIP my funny brother SAS.

The Tradionalist Workers' Party was one of the up-and-comers on the alt-right scene but hit a bit of a speedbump.
