Hello Janis.
Long time, no chat. I know this is old, but I'm gonna throw in my two cents:

When RAR went to the internet, rarlabs (and Ron Dwight) had no use for fidonet any longer, though.. Ron Dwight felt they could make a bundle using the web - it's probably true that they did prosper even more
I'll say this: Regardless of where I got the program (Fidonet or Internet), Ron Dwight provided service that is sadly lacking in many companies today. I obtained RAR very, very, very early in its development, and was provided a key by one of Eugene's pals. "Here, help test this," that kind of thing (It was great to have Hack Report guru Lee Jackson come in one day, saying "I've got a new archiver and you don't," and I've been beta testing the thing five feet from him for months. :). When my original key obviously didn't show up in Ron's database, he worked with me to correct that. He didn't have to do so, and frankly, I wasn't in any position to complain about something that was given to me for free. I've abused this product more than any other archiver I've ever used, and it keeps on squeezing 'em down.
Bottom line: If someone's got a bad attitude somewhere, they might look over The Compleat Works of Ron Dwight and learn a few things from him. If your product is wonderful, but your support sucks (or doesn't exist), you won't have
happy campers like me, extolling its virtues.
Post Script: I've had some great support from Eugene, too. There were a few cosmetic issues that I reported to him some time ago -- basically, "We don't speak this way in English" -- and he wasted no time in incorporating them into the program.
