• Get Back to FidoNet

From THIARAMUS@1:123/140 to ALL on Mon Jun 18 15:54:22 2018
    Hi Everyone,

It's been 20 something years since the last time I used FidoNet, and for
the last few months I am having a really bad nostalgia about the good-old
days. It was a wonderful time of discovery of OS/2, which, in my opinion,
had the best FTN Software. I think that my favorite editor was called FleetStreet. I remember I was using T-Mail as a packer/mailer, FastEcho
as scanner/tosser, and GoldEd for text mode editing. I am not even sure
if T-Mail and FleetStreet was ever used in the United States, as I was
living in the zone 2 back than. I was trying to remember my old point
number, but I can't get past the node. 2:460/35.xx... It is not important though, even the parts I can remember giving me enough flashbacks :)

What I really wanted to find out, is if it's possible to set up working
FidoNet point software package these days, getting a new account and get reinstated as FidoNet point? :) I mean replacing the dial up part with something internet based obviously, and keep the rest working more or
less as it was before? Nostalgia sake. I've got myself a "retro" 166MMX
Pentium laptop, which I am about to turn into a little Time Machine.

I was pretty much surprised finding working BBS, which gave me a little
hope that there might be still working nodes out there...

My apologies if I picked the wrong board to post this message or wrote something off the topic.

    Best regards,
    Roma

There are a couple of specialized point packages advertized here from time to time, but you could also still use GoldEd and FastEcho, and use binkd as your IP mailer...

You could but you may also want to opt for just grabbing a node number and running software that handles the tossing/reading/binkp functions all in one.

Thank you for listing this point packages! It sure will make a great
fall-back plan B for me, if my original plan of bringing good-old OS/2
Warp 4.5.2 back to life will fail.

So far I gathered almost all necessary components like binkD for OS/2, FastEcho/2 and FleetStreet for OS/2 (yay! that was the best editor back
in the day). I remember that many years ago it wasn't too hard for me to configure all that config files by myself, FE even had a some sort of GUI
setup tool. The only thing is that I never used binkD before, as I was
using T-Mail and sometimes Argus with dialup modem, but I am sure I will
figure it out, may be with some help from the community.

They are indeed fine software packages.

The very first step will be to set up a boss node to exchange mail with. After that we will be more than happy to assist you with the binkd and other stuff.

Yeah, OS/2 was my OS of choice way back in the 1990's but
unfortunately I had to move on to something else.

    Have you considered ArcaOS(http://arcanoae.com)

Me too, long time ago. And I am not planning to move back to it entirely. I just want my little "time
    machine" :)

    Have you considered ArcaOS(http://arcanoae.com)
Actually this project and eComStation got my attention some time ago (and
    Haiku OS, but it is
another story, not related to OS/2 at all :) ), but I just don't feel
    confident enough to purchase a
personal license for $129.00 at this moment. ArcaOS just doesn't seem ready enough as of now,
and there is no trial version available to give it a try.

Sorry about that but this is a long-standing problem with that
particular file and I can't figure out what's wrong with it. In fact,
there's nothing actually wrong with the file at all, it seems to be a
problem with my Web Hosts platform! The download appears to complete successfully but for some unknown reason, the downloaded file is much
    smaller than it should be??
