The Night Manager is another fine adventure through a world of international settings and illegal trade.

The series is based on John LeCarre's book of the same name.

If you like espionage, intrigue, adventure.. and bits of adult situations thrown in, then The Night Manager is a fine wild ride.

Hugh Laurie (of HOUSE fame) plays an arms dealer. His Latvian is terrible (my first language is Latvian, so I should know!) LOL. And, to portray that Latvians can be criminals at such an international level is completely imaginary - of course. ;)

An agent is embedded as a hotel manager (hence, the title) to sniff out corrupt activities.

Originally aired in 2016, but I only picked it up a year or so later. It is only one season of 6 episodes, but it's fast-paced, and the last episode is a fine conclusion - as it mirrors the book's storyline. Season 2 with a new/continuing storyline is in the works.

Your written English is very good, better than some natives. :)
    I would have never known.

I did not have to learn English.

Being born in Canada, I grew up with it spoken all around me (neighbors, friends, the greater community, school, etc) and on tv. For the most part, my parents always spoke the native Latvian in the home and to me. However, it was always usually English with my older sibling; "I'm gonna kill you!" was a common phrase. I was the walking English dictionary (and how do you spell..) person for my mom.

I had an A-ha! moment in the 4th grade, when I suddenly realized that Latvian-English was really just one single language to me. When I realized that I could speak either Latvian or English without having to think about either in advance, I wanted the same experience with French. But I was too old by then (as science also concludes) to develop that same assimilation.

The spoken-Latvian scene in The Night Manager is brief. The accent is very Russified (forced, very Russian-sounding, poor articulation.)

Watched it last year I believe. Enjoyed it. I'm not Latvian so the accent didn't bother me <g>
