• WinPoint & IPv6

From Michiel van der Vlist@2:280/5555 to All on Thu Mar 17 12:52:49 2022
    Hello All,

WinPoint now supports IPv6. It does not have fall back to IPv4 yet and it only calls out via IPv6 if there is an AAAA record but no A record in the host name. WInpoint points can now have an IPv6 only Boss.

My WinPoint point 2:280/5555.10 now polls me via IPv6. ( At host name fido6.vlist.eu )

    Cheers, Michiel

    Here is the report:

    1) I created a host name for my system with only an AAAA record. Rinaldo configured that host name in his WinPoint config. Rinaldo polled with the IPv6 address.

    2) I added an A record to that host name. Rinaldo polled with IPv6.

    3) I removed the AAAA record for the host name. Rinaldo polled with IPv4.

    4) I added the AAAA record back in. Rinaldo polled with IPv6.

    5) I removed the A record. Rinalodo polls with IPv6.

Conclusion: Winpoint follows the OS if the OS is configured to do IPv6 first if the host is reachable by IPv6 and IPv4. If only one of the two is available WinPoint uses that. All as expected.

What was not tested was the case that the OS is configured to try IPv4 first.

Cool, which means it would use IPv6 by default here, since all my systems are configured to try IPv6 first, before falling back to IPv4. Nice to see more IPv6 support in BBS related software.

Sure. Trying IPv6 first is what is more or less the default in almost all cases. Winpoint does not yet support fall back to IPv4 but that will be a matter of time.

I think there are some corner cases where this is the exception, but mostly, it's IPv6 first by default.

I have an Android app that doesn't like IPv6 enabled in the app on an IPv4 only connection. It doesn't seem to fall back.

If a device is on an IPv4 only connection, it should not even try to connect by IPv6 but just use IPv4. In my dictionary "Fall back" is when an IPv6 connection seems possible and is tried but fails and IPv4 is next.

Anyway, I say that particular app is broken.

Yeah, it's weird. when the phone is on wifi, there's IPv6 available, but when the wifi drops out, there's only an IPv4 connection.

That makes sense if it falls back to a 2G, 3G or 4G connection that does not support IPv6. But the app should handle that gracefully.

I think android has a problem there also.. My phone is permanently connected to mobile data with ipv6. Also when wifi is on. If I connect to a ipv4-only wifi, the phone does not use the ipv6 mobile connection which still is on.

Interesting. Your setup is a bit unusual I'd say. Normally the phone would alway use Wifi when availaible, IPv6 or not. But apparently you have configured it to always use the IPv6 mobile connection, even when Wifi is available.

In that case Android preferring the IPv4 only Wifi connection seems an odd choice....
