SixXs Sunset 06-06-2017

Last week I received an e-mail from Tunnel broker SixXs announcing
that they will shut down on the sixth day of the sixth month of
this year. It did not come totally unexpected. The writing has been
on the wall for quit a while. In December 2015 they stopped accepting
new accounts and in April 2016, they stopped accepting requests for
new tunnels and new subnets. So we can't say we didn't see it coming.

SixXs has been active since 1999. Their objective was to facilitate
the transition towards IPv6. They have provided a stable and
reliable free service for the Internet community for 18 years.

But all things come to an end. One of the arguments mentioned for
closing down was that ISPs are using the availability of tunnels as
an excuse to postpone IPv6 roll out. I have no way to fact check that
claim. It may be true and in that case I can follow the reasoning and
we may have to reckon with other tunnel brokers such as he.net to
follow. Or maybe they just are frustrated that tunnels are still in
demand because everything is going so slow. I can sympathise with
them. The transition to IPv6 should have been completed years ago, but
all parties involved are dragging their feet. So in all likehood the
founders of SIxXs just got tired of it. It happens.

Also, not everyone liked the way SixXs handled things. They made users
jump through hoops or at least that was how it was preceived by many.
Let's not forget is was a free servive entirely run by volunteers.

What is the impact on Fdionet? It is limited. Of the 55 listed IPv6
nodes, 33 now have native IPv6. Of the remaining 22, only two use a
SixXs tunnel. Inconvenient for those two, but I am sure they will
find an alternative and Fidonet will move on.
