• Arj File Compression

From Allen Prunty@1:2320/100 to All on Fri Aug 26 19:21:00 2016
Is there anyone out there that still uses ARJ?

I am pleased to find their website is still up and that there are more
current releases there than what is listed here.

I still use it and prefer it to some of the other archivers out there.

I used to be a fan of Arj over Zip. I loved it's big option set. Even
used it profesionally to send compressed files to customers. But that
    was a longtime ago... :-/ ;)

I know what you mean... ARJ was a lot more flexible than ZIP. However back
in the day I knew Phil Katz from the BBS scene pretty well. He was very supportive for the sysops.

I e-mailed PKWare to ask them how much it is to register their command line utility since I am encountering a few older files that infozip won't touch.

They asked what e-mail address I used to register it. I almost lost my
coffee since back in the day I didn't HAVE an e-mail address per say.

I'm going to write them back and say my email address back in the day was a bang path email. disk!allen would do it or was it allen!disk. My memory is foggy I think it was system then person back then.

disk was short for "Digital Information Systems of Kentucky" my first venture into the art of being a sysop. On an old, even by those days, DEC PDP11 that took up most of the room.

Mind if I ask what you did professionally?

It's what I still do ;), working for the same employer for almost 25 years now,
writing software and being the system administrator...

    Bye, Wilfred.

That's a long time... I was certain you worked in the IT industry. 25 years
at the same employer in the USA is almost unheard of anymore. They must
really care about their employees in your country.

Everyone thinks that the United States is such a great place, but
unfortunately we are a land where one company is constantly getting bought
out by another company. There's no guarantees of employment here anymore.

The only place that was stable is Government and that's not exactly a
    guarantee of employment anymore either.
