  • norton vs malwarebytes

    Hello everybody!

    i'm contemplating to change from Norton Security Deluxe to Malwarebytes Premium, as i understood they won awards last year?
    I'm not going to use VPN functionality as i have that already sorted, also i'm already using a password manager. So the main focus is on anti-virus/anti-malware on win/mac/android.

    Your thoughts?

    I think on Windows, the included Microsoft Defender suffices. You don't really need a paid subscription with one of the commercial virus scan sollutions. It's also probably the fastest sollution.

    I don't know what the situation is on the Mac or Android. My guess is, most people don't use anything extra on their iPhones or Android phones for virus prevention.

    I take the same approach on windows in general, preferring not to install any additional resident virus-detection software to the OS.
    But from time to time, not that often, I do one-time scans of the system using some on-demand malware removal tools, like Emsisoft Emerg Kit or Adw Cleaner or so.
    Just to be on the safe side.

    One issue that affects bbsing in particular is that websites that contain compressed files for download... like old DOS door programs whose executables could be compressed using PKLite or somesuch... are likely to get flagged, or even blocked, by their software.

    When I say "blocked," I don't mean just the website but any other service... telnet, SSH, binkd, etc... you might be using to connect to them.

    They flagged my IPA. Since I was not a paying Malwarebytes customer, they would not remove it from their list. I basically had to turn off file access for web or FTP access. As I don't actually pay for a static IPA (but can have the same one for several months), my IPA eventually changed so I think I got off their bad list that way, but I never have put my file areas back online.
