    Hello All.

In this time of countless destructive programs that are transmitted
to you via E-Mail, the BBS community of System Operators offer a
secure "shield" from these intrusions. Many BBSes offer a "text only"
form of internet E-Mail through a special system of "gates". These
gates effectively trap file attachments and active "scripts" that can
attack your computer. You are completely isolated from the
destructive attempts. The trade-off? You generally cannot receive
attachments of pictures, files, or Web Page type mails; only text.
Many folks find this alternative quite acceptable.

The benefits? Many BBSes have sophisticated "spam traps" in place
that dump the all-too-common garbage mail that swamps many people.
You don't need a fast computer or high-speed internet connection in
most cases. Many BBSes still maintain "dial-up" lines as well as
"telnet" connections via the internet. The speed requirement is very
low. With dial-up BBSes you don't even need a connection to the
internet at all - no Internet Service Provider required. It's a
completely different environment than the Web.

Call or telnet into one of the systems listed here or at

I didn't think usbbs.org still existed. I used to have their door as
a BBS listing door, but I hadn't seen data updates on it in a long time.

... Of course I'm on topic!! What conference is this??!!

as a BBS listing door, but I hadn't seen data updates on it in a
    long time.

It turns out you're quite correct. It's still there, but only as a historical marker site with a somewhat complete history of its existance, but no longer any listings.

The other site is still there and active, but the URL has changed a bit to http://www.dmine.com with no /telnet at the end. The format has changed a bit there and it now a more useful site with all sorts of BBS related info, including the telnettable BBS listings.

I'll alter the ad (which was written 20 years ago) to reflect these changes.

    Thanks for the heads-up!

    Best regards,
    Marc
