Anyone here have techinal insights and experience about fibre installations?
I was scheduled to have a fibre installation the other day.
First, the tech was given the wrong address. After that was
rectified, he told me that he was told that my building "didn't
qualify", even though we could see spare loops of fibre cable
on some nearby poles, *and* there were even two spare ports on
the terminal. My neighbor had a fibre feed to his building, no
problem.
When I asked what "didn't qualify" meant, all he could tell me
was that first there wasn't any "assignment" for my address -
which was later corrected - but something else is behind the
"didn't qualify". As a tech installer, he had no idea what is
behind those classifications. With two spare "unassigned"
ports, that seemed strange to the tech. He was simply told
that they weren't available to use.

I'm considering AT&T Fiber, been concerned about the install. We have
fiber on the pole, we have a long stretch that crosses the street
between poles. AT&T Fiber is the lowest on the pole, and my neighbor
has had his knocked down thrice in as many years by passing trucks. It
takes AT&T a day to dispatch a guy in a van to look at it, confirm that
it's cut, and call for a truck - which takes a week or so to repair the
line.
Rumor has it they don't use exterior ONTs any more - it would be nice
If they can get fiber into my office, which is on the outside of the
house near where they'd bring the fiber in, I'd be golden.
What upset me even more is that coax was not installed by AT&T. I purchased the RG6 cable and ran it myself. The tech had *no right* to cut and remove it without my approval. He didn't even tell me about it until I asked.
I got on the phone and was *NOT* a happy customer. The district supervisor called me back and assured me someone would be out that day to correct the botched install. When that tech arrived, he just shook his head, apologized, and then laughed. Probably for longer than he should have.
