MultiDesk

MultiDesk is an extension package for OS/2, that enables multiple desktops and users, with individual configurations.
MultiDesk is under heavy development, and features are added constantly. It takes a slightly different approach than other similar software products, that may make it a little less convenient to use, but a LOT more powerful.

Main features are:
  • Multiple desktops, completely separate from each other;
  • ...this means even separate class list: you can have different desktop enhancers for different users;
  • Multiple users, each with his own desktop;
  • Customizable environment, on a user-per-user basis;
  • Customizable shell: the user is NOT forced to use the WPS;
  • Customizable resolution: each user can have a different video resolution;
  • Configurable default user;
  • Configurable "root" (administrator) user;
  • Configurable security settings;
  • Locking of files to prevent users from reading/writing (e.g. configuration and password files are automatically locked).
  • A full-featured user-management program, that can be used to:
    • Create/delete users;
    • Create/delete desktops;
    • Customize desktops;
    • Copy settings from one desktop to another;

Planned features are:
  • Utility to copy objects from one desktop to another, or to clone the whole desktop; (near future)
  • Customizable pre/post login scripts;
  • Definition of different default users based on the hour of the day, or on the day of the week;
  • WarpCenter management (i.e. different WarpCenters for different users); (near future)
  • ...your ideas :-)

Current version is 0.1.9. Download is here, or yu can get it from Hobbes.
You need WarpIN to install MultiDesk.

WARNING: Netscape does NOT understand the .WPI extension. You'll have to press <SHIFT> while clicking on the link to download it. It is even possible that Netscape will download it in ASCII mode, resulting in a corrupt file.

There are several workarounds for this situation:
  • Use another HTTP downloader, such as WGet;
  • Download it from Hobbes with an FTP client;
  • If you have already installed WarpIN, you can use the included WIZilla tool; look in the docs for instructions on how to install it;
