What Ini2URLs does
Ini2URLs creates Workplace Shell URL Objects from the information in your
WebExplorer quicklist!
These URL objects can be drag-and-dropped onto WebExplorer to quickly access an URL.
You can rearrange the URL objects in URL folders, and re-import the changes back into your WebExplorer quicklist.
A great time-saving shortcut for people who frequent many sites on the Net, since the WebExplorer Quicklist Menu holds very few items before requiring you to scroll through a dialog box!
Great for teaching your children/parents/friends how to use the World Wide Web!!!
Creating URL objects from your Quicklist
To create URL objects from your WebExplorer Quicklist, double click on the Ini2URLs program object which was installed on the desktop.
Creating URL folders to put your URL objects into
To create special URL folders (complete with snazzy icons!) double click on the "Make a new URL folder" program object which was installed in the My_URLs folder on your desktop.
Synchronizing your URL folders with your WebExplorer Quicklist
When you run Ini2URLs the first time, it will create an empty folder called New_URLs in the My_URLs folder.
If you add more URLs to your quicklist in WebExplorer while travelling the web, they will be added to the bottom of your Quicklist.
To create URL objects for these new URLs, double click the "Ini2URLs v3.0" program object again.
URL objects will be created for the new URLs in your New_URLs folder.
You can then move those URLs to the My_URLs folder, or to any other URL folders you have created.
If you've reorganized your URLs folders, or manually added URL objects with drag-and-drop or the WebExplorer URL object template,
you can synchronize your WebExplorer quicklist with your URL folders by running URLs2Ini.
This will replace the quicklist section with one that mirrors your URLs folders.
Once you've created your URL objects with Ini2URLs, and organized them how you want, you can update your WebExplorer Quicklist by double-clicking URLs2Ini.
How to Install Ini2URLs 3:
UnZip the Ini2URLs.Zip file.
You should use Info-Zip's UNZIP.EXE utility to do this, because PKUNZIP will not (by default) recreate the directory structure.
Also, Info-Zip is freeware, PKUNZIP is not.
(I'm not completely sure, but I think that PKUNZIP/DOS can't recreate the EA's for files (icons, etc)).
Drag the Ini2URLs directory that you unzipped to the directory you want Ini2URLs to be installed in.
If you have never installed Ini2URLs, skip to the section "New Installations"
If you installed any previous version of Ini2URLs, I suggest you completely uninstall it before installing Ini2URLs 3.
This will make things go much smoother and your URL Folders will get the new URL Folder icons...
- First backup your URLs.
To do this, right click on your My_URLs folder (this was called WebXURLs in version 1) and click "Copy..."
Choose a name and location for the new folder and click OK.
- Delete the original My_URLs folder, and Ini2URLs program Icon.
- Run Fix-Fold.cmd which is in the Ini2URLs folder you unzipped.
- Then proceed with a "New Installation"
Version 2 Users:
You should remove any folder entries you created, or change the URL for each folder entry to:
http://dummy.ini2urls.X where X is a unique string.
It's probably easier just to remove them all, because recreating the structure is easier now...
New Installations
Double click on the Install.cmd file.
The following objects will be created on your Desktop:
- Program object: "Ini2URLs v3.0"
- Folder object: "My_URLs"
Ini2URLs is installed!
You should now double click the "Ini2URLs v3.0" icon on your desktop to create URL objects from your quicklist.
URL Folders
URL folders are special Workplace Shell folders that Ini2URLs and URLs2Ini can find where ever you move them to.
(on your own computer, that is!)
The Install program creates the "My_URLs" folder for you.
When you run Ini2URLs for the first time, it will create a "New_URLs" folder.
The "Make a new URLs folder" utility will create a new URL folder for you.
URLs2Ini only looks at the folders created by this program, the My_URLs folder, and the New_URLs folder.
You can move and rename any of the URLs folders whenever you want.
The New_URLs folder can be a bit tricky to safely rename though...
How to safely rename the New_URLs folder
- Synchronize your quicklist with Ini2URLs. (optionally move the new URL objects where you want them)
- Rename the New_URLs folder.
- Use URLs2Ini to update your quicklist.
Recreating deleted URL folders
- If you delete the My_URLs folder, run My_URLs.cmd to recreate it.
- If you delete the New_URLs folder, the New_URLs.cmd program can recreate it.
Future Plans
I've got some ideas for making things easier in WebExplorer, but haven't thought them out completely yet.
I'll put the information in this space when I've got a clearer picture where I'm going with Ini2URLs.
If you have any ideas you want to see in Ini2URLs, e-Mail me.
Last Words (worth reading)
I have my URLs folder window on the right of my screen, fairly narrow, and very tall.
The Icons are small, the font is 8.Helv, and the style is Non-Flowed.
The folder is set to always maintain sorted order (by Type).
The Install program sets up the My_URLs folder to use a similar setup.
If you use Object Desktop, I suggest turning on Browse mode for your URLs folders.
Browse mode will let you navigate to-and-from subfolders quickly without opening more windows on your screen.
The Object Navigator is another great way to navigate the URL folders.
For more information on Object Desktop, point your WWW Browser to:

or
http://www.stardock.com
I highly recommend Object Desktop to all OS/2 Users!!
Note that I have no affiliation to Stardock except that I'm a customer!

I hope you like Ini2URLs. E-Mail me
suggestions, comments, critiques, whatever... No flame mail though,
I'm just a poor OS/2 developer! ;-)
Requirements:
- OS/2 Warp (Red/Blue/Connect... pick your poison!)
- IBM WebExplorer (the current version is 1.03)
- You should have a quicklist in your Explore.Ini or some WebExplorer URL objects.
Without them this program is of limited use to you.
(until you create one of the two)
- The "SET ETC=" line of your CONFIG.SYS file must point to the directory that contains your Explore.Ini file.
If you have installed TCP/IP or the Warp Internet Access Kit this should be done already.
- You MUST have the WebExplorer_URL object class registered in your Workplace Shell.
If you're not sure if it is, check the Templates folder for a "WebExplorer URL" template, or:
- click the Find button on the LaunchPad
- click the "More" button
- click the "Change" button
- change the "Attribute:" listbox to "Object Class"
- look for "WebExplorer_URL" which is a descendent of "Data File"
- If "WebExplorer_URL" is there, the class is registered.
- If not, you likely aren't using a new enough version of WebExplorer, or WebExplorer wasn't installed properly.
Use the "Retrieve Software Updates" program to upgrade WebExplorer, or download the current version from a different source, such as IBM's FTP site.
