Quickfinder
Unfortunately we no longer have the time to maintain a FAQ or other extra
documents. The old version of the FAQ is already quite outdated, but Evan
L. Schemm is working on that; he is also collecting some useful information
for VICE users. Have a look at his VICE
page.
Anyway, we probably need more help to keep all things going, so here
is the usual call for volunteers... ;-) If you like to join our
group, and help us in any way , please send a mail to
vice-devel@firenze.linux.it.
What is VICE?
VICE is a Versatile Commodore Emulator, i.e. a program that
runs on a Unix, MS-DOS, Win95/NT, OS/2
or RiscOS machine and executes programs intended for the old 8-bit Commodore
computers. The current version emulates the C64, the C128 (80 column screen
is included now), the VIC20, all the PET models (except the SuperPET 9000,
which is out of line anyway) and the CBM-II (aka C610).
If you have any comments or bug reports, please contact us at one of
the addresses given below. There is also an Evaluation
Form you can fill out on the Web.
VICE is under constant change. Anyone interested in helping development
of VICE is welcome. Please contact
us
to avoid doing something that someone else has done already. (-:
Of course our warm thanks go to everyone who has helped us in developing
VICE during these past few years.

Binaries for Linux (Pentium-optimized, glibc2-based)
These binaries require a glibc2-based system, such as Red Hat 5.x
or Debian 2.0. Although they are optimized for the Pentium processor (by
using the Pentium-enhanced version of GNU CC, PGCC),
they should work on any i386-compatible processor.

Tarball: Not available.
-
RPM: Not available.
-
Binary for MS-DOS (Pentium-optimized): vice14.zip
Please use the '-d' option if you are using pkzip, to unpack the
archive with the full directory tree. Otherwise you get error messages
about some ROMs (kernal, basic etc) not being found.
-
Binary for MS-Windows 32bit (Pentium-optimized): WinVICE-1.4.zip
-
Binary for Risc OS systems: vice-riscos1_4.zip
-
Binary for OS/2 systems: vice-os2-1.4.zip. Additional information can be found at the Vice/2 homepage.

Note: Some people reported problems accessing the FUNET FTP
server. If this happens to you, try the FUNET HTTP interface http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/cbm/crossplatform/emulators/VICE.
If you like, you can use the same digital joysticks the Commodore machines
can use, by connecting them to the parallel port; this only works on Linux.
To do so, you have to grab the following custom version of the Linux joystick
driver:
Instructions for building the cables are included (see the README.digital
file). Many thanks to Bernhard Kuhn
and Christof Petig, who have
hacked this version of the Linux joystick driver.
Contacts
Please put the word VICE in all capitals in your subject
line (e.g. VICE fails to run game XXX). This helps mail splitting
and reduces chances that your message is unintentionally deleted, forgotten
or lost.
