Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2023 October 17 [2]An orange elliptical ring is shown that is a disk of gas and dust around the star PDS 70. In the center of the disk is a fuzzy spot and near the inner right edge of the disk is another fuzzy spot. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. PDS 70: Disk, Planets, and Moons Image Credit: [3]ALMA ([4]ESO/[5]NAOJ/[6]NRAO); [7]M. Benisty [8]et al. Explanation: It's not the big ring that's attracting the most attention. Although the big planet-forming ring around the star [9]PDS 70 is clearly imaged and itself quite interesting. It's also not the planet on the right, just inside the [10]big disk, that’s being talked about the most. Although the planet [11]PDS 70c is a newly formed and, interestingly, similar in size and mass to [12]Jupiter. It's the fuzzy patch around the [13]planet PDS 70c that's [14]causing the commotion. That fuzzy patch is thought to be a [15]dusty disk that is now forming into moons -- and that had never been seen before. The [16]featured image was taken in 2021 by the [17]Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) of 66 [18]radio telescopes in the high [19]Atacama Desert of northern [20]Chile. Based on ALMA data, [21]astronomers infer that the moon-forming exoplanetary disk has a radius similar to our Earth's orbit, and may one day form three or so [22]Luna-sized moons -- not very different from our [23]Jupiter's [24]four.
