Evans Explanation: Bright at infrared wavelengths, [4]this merging galaxy pair is some 500 million light-years away toward the constellation Delphinus. The [5]cosmic mashup is seen against a background of even more distant galaxies, and occasional spiky foreground stars. But the galaxy merger itself spans about 100,000 light-years in this deep [6]James Webb Space Telescope image. The image data is from Webb's Near-InfraRed Camera ([7]NIRCam) and Mid-InfraRed Instrument ([8]MIRI). Their combined, sharp infrared view follows galactic scale [9]restructuring in the dusty merger's wild jumble of intense star forming regions and distorted spiral arms Tomorrow's picture: Stereo Saturday __________________________________________________________________ [10]< | [11]Archive | [12]Submissions | [13]Index | [14]Search | [15]Calendar | [16]RSS | [17]Education | [18]About APOD | [19]Discuss | [20]> __________________________________________________________________ Authors & editors: [21]Robert Nemiroff ([22]MTU) & [23]Jerry Bonnell ([24]UMCP) NASA Official: Phillip Newman [25]Specific rights apply.
