Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 August 29 [2]The featured image shows the famous Horsehead nebula in Orion, a dark dust figure superposed on glowing gas. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. The Horsehead Nebula Region without Stars Image Credit & Copyright: [3]George Chatzifrantzis Explanation: The famous Horsehead Nebula in Orion is not alone. A deep exposure shows that the [4]dark familiar shaped indentation, visible just right of center, is part of a [5]vast complex of absorbing [6]dust and [7]glowing gas. The featured [8]spectacular picture details an intricate [9]tapestry of gaseous wisps and dust-laden [10]filaments that were created and sculpted over eons by [11]stellar winds and ancient [12]supernovas. The [13]Flame Nebula is visible in orange just to the Horsehead's left. To highlight the dust and gas, most of the [14]stars have been [15]digitally removed, although a notable exception is [16]Alnitak, just above the Flame Nebula, which is the rightmost star in [17]Orion's famous belt of three aligned stars. The [18]Horsehead Nebula lies 1,500 [19]light years distant towards the [20]constellation of Orion.
