Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 May 17 [2]The featured image shows a deep image of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 featuring many concentric shells which embed a smaller galaxy. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide Image Credit & Copyright: Capture: [3]Greg Turgeon; Processing: [4]Kiko Fairbairn Explanation: Astronomers turn detectives when trying to figure out the cause of startling sights like [5]NGC 1316. Investigations indicate that [6]NGC 1316 is an enormous [7]elliptical galaxy that started, about 100 million years ago, to devour a smaller [8]spiral galaxy neighbor, [9]NGC 1317, just on the upper right. Supporting evidence includes the dark [10]dust lanes characteristic of a [11]spiral galaxy, and faint swirls and shells of stars and gas visible in this wide and deep image. One thing that [12]>remains unexplained is the unusually small [13]globular star clusters, seen as faint dots on the image. Most [14]elliptical galaxies have [15]more and brighter globular clusters than [16]NGC 1316. Yet the observed [17]globulars are too old to have been created by the recent [18]spiral collision. One hypothesis is that these [19]globulars survive from an even earlier [20]galaxy that was subsumed into [21]NGC 1316. Another surprising attribute of [22]NGC 1316, also known as Fornax A, is its [23]giant lobes of gas that glow brightly in [24]radio waves.
