Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 April 12 [2]The featured image shows the dark nebula N11 which appears in the Large Magellanic Cloud -- a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. N11: Star Clouds of the LMC Image Credit: [3]NASA, [4]ESA; Processing: [5]Josh Lake Explanation: Massive stars, abrasive winds, mountains of [6]dust, and [7]energetic light sculpt one of the largest and most picturesque regions of [8]star formation in the [9]Local Group of Galaxies. Known as [10]N11, the region is [11]visible on the upper right of many images of its home galaxy, the [12]Milky Way neighbor known as the [13]Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The [14]featured image was taken for scientific purposes by the Hubble Space Telescope and [15]reprocessed for artistry. Although the section imaged above is known as [16]NGC 1763, the entire N11 emission nebula is second in LMC size only to the [17]Tarantula Nebula. Compact [18]globules of dark dust housing emerging young stars are also visible around the image. A [19]recent study of [20]variable stars in the LMC with [21]Hubble has helped to recalibrate the [22]distance scale of the [23]observable universe, but resulted in a [24]slightly different scale than [25]found using the pervasive [26]cosmic microwave background.
