Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2022 March 15 [2]An image of the road to the La Silla Observatory in Chile with telescope on the horizon and stars, galaxies, planets, and airglow in the sky. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Road to the Stars Image Credit: [3]ESO, [4]Petr Horálek ([5]ESO [6]Photo Ambassador, [7]Inst. of Physics in Opava) Explanation: Pictured -- a very scenic road to the stars. The road approaches [8]La Silla Observatory in [9]Chile, with the [10]ESO's [11]3.6-meter telescope just up ahead. To the left are some futuristic-looking [12]support structures for the planned [13]BlackGEM telescopes, an array of optical telescopes that will help locate optical counterparts to [14]gravitational waves detections by [15]LIGO and other detectors. But there is much more. Red [16]airglow illuminates the night sky on the right, while the [17]central band of our [18]Milky Way Galaxy slants across [19]the image center. [20]Jupiter can [21]be seen just above the band near the image center, while [22]Saturn is visible just above the 3.6-meter telescope dome. The two largest satellite galaxies of our [23]Milky Way Galaxy, the [24]LMC and [25]SMC, are seen on the far right. The [26]featured image panorama was built up from multiple 15-second exposures that were captured on 2019 June 30. Two days later, [27]La Silla experienced a [28]rare total eclipse of the Sun.
