   [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our
      fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation
                    written by a professional astronomer.

   [2]The featured image shows what the Earth looks like at night in 2016
    by featuring human-made lights. The image is a composite created from
      images and data taken by the Suomi NPP satellite. Please see the
                 explanation for more detailed information.

                               Earth at Night

   Explanation: This is what the [8]Earth looks like at night. Can you
   find your favorite [9]country or [10]city? Surprisingly, city lights
   make this task quite possible. Human-made [11]lights highlight
   particularly developed or [12]populated areas of the Earth's surface,
   including the seaboards of [13]Europe, the [14]eastern United States,
   and [15]Japan. Many large cities are located near [16]rivers or
   [17]oceans so that they can exchange goods cheaply by boat.
   Particularly [18]dark areas include the central parts of [19]South
   America, [20]Africa, [21]Asia, and [22]Australia. The [23]featured
   image, nicknamed [24]Black Marble, is actually a composite of hundreds
   of pictures [25]remade in 2016 from data taken by the orbiting
   [26]Suomi NPP [27]satellite.
