Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 August 15 [2]See Explanation. Perseid Rain Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Luo Hongyang Explanation: Comet dust rained down on planet Earth last week, streaking through dark skies in the annual Perseid meteor shower. The featured picture is a composite of many images taken from the same location over the peak night of [4]the Perseids. The umbrella was [5]not needed as a shield from meteors, since they almost entirely [6]evaporate high in the [7]Earth's atmosphere. Many of the component images featured [8]individual Perseids, while one image featured the foreground near [9]Jiuquan City, [10]Gansu Province, [11]China. The stellar background includes the central band of our [12]Milky Way [13]Galaxy, appearing nearly vertical, as well as the planets [14]Jupiter and [15]Saturn on the left. Although the [16]comet dust particles are traveling [17]parallel to each other, the resulting [18]shower meteors clearly seem to radiate from a single point on the sky -- the [19]radiant in the [20]eponymous constellation [21]Perseus. The image captured so long an angular field that the [22]curvature of the sky is visible in the trajectory of the [23]Perseids.
