Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 June 28 [2]The picture shows an artistic photograph of a partial solar eclipse. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Paper Moon Solar Eclipse Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Wang Letian ([4]Eyes at Night) Explanation: It may look like a [5]paper Moon. Sailing past a [6]canvas Sun. But those are not cardboard clouds. And [7]it's not make believe. The featured picture of an [8]orange colored sky is real -- a digital composite of two exposures of the [9]solar eclipse that occurred earlier this month. The [10]first exposure was taken with a regular telescope that captured an overexposed Sun and an underexposed Moon, while the second image was taken with a [11]solar telescope that captured details of the [12]chromosphere of the background Sun. The Sun's [13]canvas-like texture was brought up by imaging in a very [14]specific shade of red emitted by [15]hydrogen. Several [16]prominences can be seen around the Sun's edge. The image was captured just before sunset from [17]Xilingol, [18]Inner Mongolia, [19]China. It's also not make-believe to imagine that [20]the Moon is made of dense rock, [21]the Sun is made of hot gas, and [22]clouds are made of [23]floating droplets of water and ice.
