¿ Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 June 8 [2]The picture shows Jupiter during a pass of Juno at a time when some of the clouds look like a face. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. A Face in the Clouds of Jupiter from Juno Image Credit: [3]NASA/[4]JPL-Caltech/[5]SwRI/[6]MSSS/[7]Jason [8]Major Explanation: What do you see in the clouds of Jupiter? On the largest scale, circling the planet, [9]Jupiter has alternating [10]light zones and reddish-brown belts. Rising zone gas, [11]mostly hydrogen and helium, usually swirls around regions of high pressure. Conversely, falling belt gas usually [12]whirls around regions of low pressure, like cyclones and [13]hurricanes on Earth. Belt storms can form into large and long-lasting [14]white ovals and [15]elongated [16]red spots. NASA's robotic [17]Juno spacecraft captured most of these cloud features in 2017 during [18]perijove 6, its [19]sixth pass over the giant planet in its looping 2-month orbit. But it is surely not these clouds themselves that [20]draws your attention to the [21]displayed image, but rather their [22]arrangement. The face that stands out, nicknamed [23]Jovey McJupiterFace, lasted perhaps a few weeks before the neighboring storm clouds rotated away. Juno has now completed 33 orbits [24]around Jupiter and just yesterday made a [25]close pass near [26]Ganymede, our Solar System's [27]largest moon.
