¿ Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 April 20 [2]A picture of the Ant Nebula from the Hubble Space Telescope Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Planetary Nebula Mz3: The Ant Nebula Image Credit: [3]R. Sahai ([4]JPL) et al., [5]Hubble Heritage Team, [6]ESA, [7]NASA Explanation: Why isn't this ant a big sphere? [8]Planetary nebula Mz3 is being cast off by a star similar to our [9]Sun that is, surely, round. Why then would the gas that is [10]streaming away create an [11]ant-shaped nebula that is distinctly not round? [12]Clues might include the high 1000-kilometer per second speed of the expelled gas, the [13]light-year long length of the structure, and the [14]magnetism of the star [15]featured here at the nebula's center. One possible answer is that [16]Mz3 is hiding a second, dimmer star that [17]orbits close in to the bright star. A competing [18]hypothesis holds that the central star's own spin and [19]magnetic field are channeling the gas. Since the central star [20]appears to be so similar to our own Sun, [21]astronomers hope that [22]increased understanding of the history of this giant space [23]ant can provide useful insight into the likely future of our own [24]Sun and [25]Earth.
