Etna has been erupting for hundreds of thousands of years. Located in [5]Sicily, [6]Italy, [7]the volcano produces lava fountains over one kilometer high. [8]Mt. Etna is not only one of the [9]most active volcanoes on [10]Earth, it is one of the largest, measuring over 50 kilometers at [11]its base and rising nearly 3 kilometers high. [12]Pictured erupting last month, a [13]lava plume shoots upwards, while hot [14]lava flows down the volcano's exterior. Likely [15]satellite trails appear above, while [16]ancient stars dot the sky far in the distance. This volcanic eruption was so strong that nearby [17]airports were closed to keep planes from flying through the dangerous plume. The image foreground and background were [18]captured consecutively by the same camera and from the same location.
