While the [4]human eye usually cannot discern many colors, cameras often can. Pictured is a [5]Quadrantids meteor captured by camera over [6]Missouri, [7]USA, early this month that was not only impressively bright, but colorful. The [8]radiant grit, likely cast off by asteroid [9]2003 EH1, blazed a path across [10]Earth's atmosphere. [11]Colors in meteors usually originate from ionized elements released as the [12]meteor disintegrates, with blue-green typically originating from [13]magnesium, [14]calcium radiating violet, and [15]nickel glowing green. Red, however, typically originates from energized [16]nitrogen and [17]oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere. This bright [18]meteoric [19]fireball was gone in a flash -- less than a second -- but it left a [20]wind-blown ionization trail that [21]remained visible for several minutes.
