NGC 2442: Galaxy in Volans Image Credit & [3]Copyright: Processing: [4]Robert Gendler & [5]Roberto Colombari Data: [6]Hubble Legacy Archive, [7]European Southern Observatory Explanation: Distorted galaxy NGC 2442 can be found in the southern constellation of the [8]flying fish, (Piscis) [9]Volans. Located about 50 million light-years away, the galaxy's two spiral arms extending from a pronounced central bar have a hook-like appearance in [10]wide-field images. But this [11]mosaicked close-up, constructed from [12]Hubble Space Telescope and [13]European Southern Observatory data, follows the galaxy's structure in [14]amazing detail. Obscuring dust lanes, young blue star clusters and [15]reddish star forming regions surround a core of yellowish light from an older population of [16]stars. The sharp image data also reveal more distant background galaxies seen right through NGC 2442's star clusters and nebulae. The image spans about 75,000 [17]light-years at the estimated distance [18]of NGC 2442.
