¿ Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2020 May 18 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/1qO6SG1HzyI Journey into the Cosmic Reef Video Credit: [3]NASA's [4]GSFC, [5]SVS; Lead Producer & Music: [6]Joseph DePasquale ([7]STScI) Explanation: What would you see if you could fly into the Cosmic Reef? The nebular cloud [8]NGC 2014 appear to some like an [9]ocean reef that resides in the sky, specifically in the [10]LMC, the largest satellite galaxy of our [11]Milky Way Galaxy. A [12]detailed image of this distant nebula was taken by the [13]Hubble Space Telescope to help [14]commemorate 30 years of investigating the cosmos. Data and images of [15]this cosmic reef have been combined into the three-dimensional model flown through in the [16]featured video. The computer animated sequence first takes you past a [17]star cluster highlighted by bright blue stars, below [18]pillars of gas and dust slowly being destroyed by the [19]energetic light and [20]winds emitted by these massive stars. Filaments of gas and dust are everywhere, glowing in the red light of [21]hydrogen and nitrogen. [22]The animation next takes you to the blue-colored nebula NGC 2020, glowing in light emitted by [23]oxygen and surrounding a [24]Wolf-Rayet star about 200,000 times brighter than our Sun -- a nebula thought to be the ejected outer atmosphere of this stellar monster. As the [25]animation concludes, the virtual camera pivots to show that [26]NGC 2020 has a familiar [27]hourglass [28]shape when viewed from the side.
