Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2020 January 29 [2]See Explanation. Milky Way over Yellowstone Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Lori Jacobs Explanation: The Milky Way was not created by an evaporating lake. [4]The pool of vivid blue water, about 10 meters across, is known as [5]Silex Spring and is located in [6]Yellowstone National Park in [7]Wyoming, [8]USA. Steam rises off [9]the spring, heated by a [10]magma chamber deep underneath known as the [11]Yellowstone hotspot. The steam blurs the image of [12]Venus, making it seem unusually large. Unrelated and far in the distance, the [13]central band of our [14]Milky Way Galaxy rises high overhead, a band lit by billions of stars. The featured picture is a 3-image panorama taken last August. If the [15]Yellowstone hotspot causes another [16]supervolcanic eruption as it did [17]640,000 years ago, a [18]large part of North America would be affected.
