Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2019 September 16 [2]See Explanation. A Lunar Corona over Turin Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Giorgia Hofer ([4]Cortina Astronomical Association) Explanation: What are those colorful rings around the Moon? A [5]corona. Rings like this will sometimes appear when the Moon is seen through thin clouds. The [6]effect is created by the quantum mechanical [7]diffraction of light around individual, similarly-sized water droplets in an [8]intervening but mostly-transparent cloud. Since light of different colors has [9]different wavelengths, each color [10]diffracts differently. [11]Lunar Coronae are one of the few [12]quantum mechanical color effects that can be [13]easily seen with the unaided eye. The [14]featured lunar corona was captured around [15]full Moon above [16]Turin, [17]Italy in 2014. [18]Similar coronae that form [19]around the Sun are usually harder to see because of the Sun's [20]great brightness.
