De Martin; Human Image Copyright: [7]Charis Tsevis; Composition: [8]R. J. Nemiroff Explanation: You are a spaceship soaring through the universe. So is your [9]dog. We all carry with us trillions of [10]microorganisms as we go through life. These multitudes of [11]bacteria, [12]fungi, and [13]archaea have different [14]DNA than you. Collectively called your microbiome, your [15]shipmates outnumber your own cells. Your crew members form [16]communities, help [17]digest food, engage in [18]battles against intruders, and sometimes commute on a [19]liquid superhighway from one end of [20]your body to the other. Much of what your [21]microbiome does, however, [22]remains unknown. You are the [23]captain, but being nice to [24]your crew may allow you to explore more of your [25]local cosmos.
