Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 November 22 [2]The featured image shows the Moon in partial eclipse over the Gran Torre Santiago building in Chile. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Lunar Eclipse over a Skyscraper Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Yuri Beletsky ([4]Carnegie [5]Las Campanas Observatory, [6]TWAN) Explanation: Why is the Moon on top of this building? [7]Planning. It took the astrophotographer careful planning -- including [8]figuring out exactly where to place the camera and exactly when to take the shot -- to create this [9]striking superposition. The single image featured was taken in the early morning hours of November 19, near the peak of the [10]partial lunar eclipse that was occurring as the [11]Moon passed through the Earth's shadow. At this time, almost the [12]entire Moon -- 99.1 percent of its area -- was in the [13]darkest part of the Earth's shadow. The building is the [14]Gran Torre Santiago building in [15]Chile, the [16]tallest building in [17]South America. Although the entire [18]eclipse lasted an impressive six hours, this image had to be taken within just a few seconds to get the alignment right -- the [19]Earth's rotation soon moved the building out of alignment. The next Earth-Moon eclipse will be a total [20]eclipse of the Sun that will occur on [21]December 4 -- but only be [22]visible from the bottom of our world.
