Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2021 October 25 [2]The picture shows the a composite image of Monument Valley, Utah, USA in the foreground, and the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy including the Galactic Center in the background. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Road to the Galactic Center Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Michael Abramyan Explanation: Does the road to our galaxy's center go through [4]Monument Valley? It doesn't have to, but if your road does -- take a picture. In this case, the road is [5]US Route 163 and iconic buttes on the [6]Navajo National [7]Reservation populate the horizon. The band of [8]Milky Way Galaxy stretches down from the sky and appears to be a [9]continuation of the road on [10]Earth. Filaments of dust darken the [11]Milky Way, in contrast to billions of bright stars and several colorful glowing gas clouds including the [12]Lagoon and [13]Trifid nebulas. The featured picture is a composite of images taken with the same camera and from the same location -- [14]Forest Gump Point in [15]Utah, [16]USA. The foreground was taken just after sunset in early September during the [17]blue hour, while the background is a mosaic of four exposures captured a few hours later.
