A chilly blanket of snow tops the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan in early March 2021. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on March 1.
The Hindu Kush Mountains sits primarily in arid Afghanistan, but the range also straddles the borders between Pakistan and India. Winter snows can be deep and treacherous in the mountains, even though the lower elevations nearby—such as the dune rippled Registan Desert—remain parched. Snow typically falls between October and March in the Hindu Kush, piling up precipitation that becomes exquisitely important to the arid region as it melts. In spring and summer, snowmelt trickles into a number of rivers to provide water for agriculture, drinking, and other vital human needs.
