The Australian State of South Australia ranks as one of the most arid parts of the country, filled with ochre-colored outback and large white salt pans. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite captured a true-color image of South Africa on September 2, 2020.
The brightest lake near the center is Lake Gairdner, the third-largest salt lake in Australia, with lakes Everard in the west and Macfarlane to the southeast. Other salt pans include Lakes Hart and Hanson, in the northeast, and Island Lagoon in the east. The large, dull-colored Lake Torrens sits farthest east while Lake Eyre, the lowest natural point in Australia at about 49 feet (15 m) covers the far northern section of South Australia. Lake Acraman, the round lake southwest of Lake Gairdner has a particularly interesting history – it is thought to the be the impact crater of a massive asteroid that struck the area somewhere around 590 million years ago.
