Iceland

On August 22, 2020, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a summer day in Iceland.

Clouds hang over the eastern section of the island nation, which has greened in the warmth of summer. With high temperatures averaging around 50˚F (10˚C) and roughly 21 hours of daylight, the thick winter snows of winter have melted and the large permanent ice caps stand out brightly from the brown volcanic rock surrounding them. A broad band along the perimeter of the island is covered in the bright green of vegetation.

As summer comes to a close and daylight shortens, temperatures drop quickly, and winter rushes its return to Iceland. By mid-October snow covers northern Iceland and by late October the entire island is wearing a wintery blanket of white.
