May 24, 2020 - Dust Storm in Algeria

Dust Storm in Algeria

A thick plume of tan dust blew across Algeria on May 22, 2020. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the event on that same day. The dust appeared to pass from the northeast to the southwest over most of interior Algeria. The dust was so thick that it obscured the land from view.

Algeria is the largest country in Africa, measuring roughly three-and-a-half times the state of Texas in the United States. The landforms are mostly high plateau and desert, with the Atlas Mountains in the far north and Hoggar Mountains in the south. Deserts sprawl across 80% of Algeria, providing ample material for dust storms. Hot weather destabilizes air near the ground, allowing even light winds to loft dust particles into the air.
