April 18, 2020 - Dust Storm in Burkina Faso

Dust Storm in Burkina Faso

A sandy shroud covered northern and western Burkina Faso in mid-April, 2020. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm on April 15. The dust is so thick in many areas that it completely obscures the land from view.

Slightly larger than the state of Colorado, the landlocked nation sits in the hot, semi-arid Sahel region of Africa, with a small hot, dry desert in the far north of the country. Bordering the countries of Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Togo, Burkina Faso struggles with increasing desertification, which can lead to more frequent dust storms.
