On March 12, 2020, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Aegean Sea, including the Balkan Peninsula.
The Aegean Sea separates Greece and Turkey and connects to the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It spans roughly 83,000 square miles in total area, measuring 380 miles north to south and 190 miles east to west.
The Balkan Peninsula sits at the southeastern part of the European continent. At the southern tip sits the country of Greece. Greece claims a long coastline that measures roughly 8,500 miles (13,676 km) and about 2,000 islands. Moving northwestward of Greece, the countries visible are Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. Bulgaria lies to the northeast of Greece and Turkey to the east.
