Orange River

The Orange River carves through a rugged, spectacular landscape, creating a ribbon of green through arid ochres, reds and tans. The river rises in the Drakensburg Mountains near Lesotho’s border then flows westward more than 2,000 km (1,242 mi) through South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Orange River as it courses through the dramatic colors of arid lands in South Africa.
