Who else is into retro gaming?

I really started getting into retro gaming when I first saw emulators appearing in the late 90s. I thought it was really cool that there were emulators that allowed playing NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and other console games on my PC. Some emulators also had some fairly interesting features, such as allowing multi-player gaming with other people over the internet.

Although I have typically been more into PC gaming, I do enjoy console games. And for a while now, it seems there are many ways to emulate old systems, beyond emulation on a PC. A few years ago, I modded my Nintendo Wii and installed some emulators on it (though life got into the way, I got busy, and I haven't played the emulators on that as much as I thought I would). Before that, I bought a GCW Zero (an open-source handheld gaming system that supports emulators, among other things). Unfortunately, it seems the screen on my GCW Zero has failed and doesn't work well now. :/

In recent years, there's also the Classic Mini systems that the popular game companies have released; there was the NES Classic Mini & SNES Classic Mini from Nintendo, and then Sega, Sony, and TurboGrafX made their own versions for their respective systems. Those are generally moddable too, so you can add additional games.

Although I've been emulating old consoles for a while, sometimes I've missed having a real console. A long time ago, I had an original NES, a Nintendo 64, and a TurboGrafX-16. For a while, a SNES as well. I just bought a SNES on eBay.. I'm not sure what all I'll do with it, since I can play the games with emulators, but it might be fun.

YES. Same here. For the most part it was because I never had a lot of those systems. I grew up with a commodore 64. My first emulator was the CCS64. I had Sega Genesis but gave it to my uncle. So it was nice to play it again in the emulator. But even beyond that, I just love how your able to play games you didn't know existed. Even with DOSBox I have fun with those older PC games.

I have a gaming PC and occasionally play newer games on it but I find the controls to be overwhelming tbh.. when you grow up using a joystick and a simple pad.. it's easier.

Pretty cool that they are releasing these, keeps the 8bit gaming alive. I had tried retropie, pretty slick OS, like an all in one gaming arcade system. I had plans to make a cabinet and install some buttons and joysticks but got busy with other projects.

Only thing I have these days is a handme down PS2 and a Gamecube lol.. still works and I do play.

For console games, I still sometimes enjoy Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Bomberman, the Mega Man games, and Tetris DX for Game Boy Color are some I enjoy. I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting right now.

For PC, SimCity 2000, Civilization 1 & 2, Electranoid (a paddle ball game), Command & Conquer, etc..

Oh yes, the Super Mario is a solid series for sure. Heard of Mega Man. Since I actually had Sega Genesis, mine would definitely be Sonic. Then I'd say SNES, I really like how they did Street Fighter and of course Mortal Kombat.

For the most part though, I run my C64, playing Impossible Mission, Gorf and Wasteland. Theres just so many more to mention actually.

For PC, SimCity 2000, Civilization 1 & 2, Electranoid (a paddle ball game), Command & Conquer, etc..

For PC, running DOSBox.. Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. I also have Railroad Tycoon that I load up every so often. Once I tried all the Sierra games for fun because, well, you can. They are pretty solid. Really like the space quest series.

Something to be said with the simplicity of retro gaming thats for sure. I've tried some newer stuff and it feels like you need a degree in free thinking or something.

I liked Sonic too. Even though I never had my own Sega Genesis, sometimes I'd play it at friends' houses who had one or at store demo kiosks.

Check out www.romhacking.net. There are mods/hacks for your favorite old games that turn them into new ones! There's one for SMB3 that turns it into SMB1, which makes the combination of older levels and newer physics pretty interesting. There are a few for SMB1 that have entirely new and challanging levels. There's also one for Zelda that makes it into a whole new game. Of course there are also a bunch of worthless ones, but I'm sure you can find the good stuff.

Check out www.romhacking.net. There are mods/hacks for your favorite old games that turn them into new ones! Interestig.. I hadn't seen that. I'll have to check it out.

So far, probably one of the most interesting ROMs I've seen is a custom ROM someone made where they basically made Super Mario World (a SNES game) for the original NES.
